Pre-press requirements for your project will vary depending on your experience so, we have outlined
information accordingly. Use as much or as little information as you need, but
remember, you are responsible for providing a trouble free disk for us to use. If you
are comfortable and experienced with Pagemaker or PDF, all you may need to know
is the General File Requirements.
What are the file requirements I need to follow to send you a file?
General File Requirements
Supported Media: ZIP 250, CD-RW, Data DVD, 3.5" Floppy, E-File Upload (via web)
At FBCP we support ONLY Windows files (excluding PDF which are cross-platform).
Supported applications are: PageMaker, Photoshop, Microsoft Publisher, Corel Draw
and PDF. Other programs including Microsoft Word, (or any other Microsoft product)
InDesign, Corel WordPerfect or other generic graphic programs MUST be converted to
PDF.
The required file format for text is PDF or Microsoft Publisher and for covers the
preferred formats are either PDF, Photoshop or Corel Draw.
What about bleeds?
Bleeds: If you have graphics that bleed (prints to the edge of the book), the minimum
bleed required by FBCP is 1/8".
What about resolution?
Default resolution: 300 dpi. And for best results, scan images close to the same size they
will be used in the book.
What about margins?
Margins: Give your page comfortable margins; we suggest a minimum of ¾" in the
gutter (center) and ½" on the other three sides. This margin includes your heads and
folios. If you are really unsure that what you have is OK, go to a bookstore and look at
samples.
What about my text?
Text Preparation: Provide PDF files for the book text pages (if black). It should be
one file for all of the text. Remember we use the word "text" to identify everything but
the cover.
All orders should (but not necessarily) be submitted as both digital files and hard copy. If
hard copy is supplied for any book as camera copy there will be a charge of $50 or $.20
per page for scanning whichever is more.
While all books start with some kind of word processing program like MS Word or Word
Perfect, NO printing process (other than the printer on your desk) can print directly from
these files. Word files must be either converted into PDF format or flowed into a page
layout program and then converted to PDF. This conversion can either be done by you for
free or done by us for a small fee. Remember: a file created in Microsoft anything
(excluding Microsoft Publisher), is not usable as is and will need to be converted either by you or by us.
How do I convert my book to PDF?
To convert a file to PDF you:
Can either buy the Adobe Acrobat Program or, for a small fee, convert your files online
at Adobe.com. Provide 1 page of your book at a time, do not give us spreads.
How do I layout my cover?
Cover Preparation: All covers are to be created in one piece including front, spine
and back. With the exception of a simple single color cover, all covers are printed from
digital files. Single color covers with no graphics can be printed either from digital files
or using clean laser copy as camera copy.
If your cover bleeds (prints to the edge of the cover) you must allow at least 1/8" of extra background
image on all sides to allow for machine tolerances in the printing and binding process.
(ie. a 5 ½” x 8 ½" front cover becomes 5 ¾” x 8 ¾".) However, your text on the cover still needs to be centered in the 5.5 inches of the your cover's finished size. Your spline must be set to the proper
width to allow for the thickness of your book.
How do I send you a file?
Sending Files/Disk Organization:
Files can be sent over the internet using our UPLOAD FILE link on our site, or may be saved to disk and mailed to us.
One file is preferred for text and one for the cover. If you have multiple files, list all files
in the order they appear in your book.
Clearly indicate which files are needed for a particular job. Do not put outdated versions
of job files on disk.
All components (files, fonts, graphics, scans, laser proofs) for cover should be sent at one
time.
Label your disk with your name and/or the job name.
Be sure we can use the media you are supplying. (see General File Requirements)
Print out a copy of what the final piece should look like.
Don’t compress your files unless necessary and if you do be sure your file is selfextracting.
Fonts:
Using the "bold", "italic" or "underlined" command from the toolbar can have
unpredictable results. It is better to use italics or bold by selecting the real font, i.e. Times
New Roman Bold, Times New Roman Italic, etc.
Also, please make sure to bundle a copy of ALL the fonts used in your project with your file transfer or disk as we may not have a particular font.
What software should I layout my book in?
Page Layout Programs:
FBCP prefers Microsoft Publisher or Adobe Pagemaker. Remember, Microsoft Word, Corel WordPerfect
or InDesign are not page layout programs, and they must be converted to PDF.
If you simply HAVE to use Microsoft Word, because you have no other program to use, please carefully follow the instructions listed in the section How do I set up Microsoft Word? BEFORE typing your project.
Some software for laying out pages allow you to use a low resolution place holder for any graphics you might use and simply links the low res. placeholder to the Hi res. file located somewhere else on your computer. PLEASE make sure that you send the Hi res. file when saving or sending the file to us.
